Every day since I’ve stared this journey I have seen one particular man. An older gentleman, he doesn’t seem to have much in the way of appropriate gear, wearing loose training shorts and a worn out rucksack. What marks him out from all the other pelegrinos is that he also carries a heavy sports bag which changes hands on a regular basis.
He must set out early each day, because I usually catch up to him mid-morning. He takes frequent rest breaks, particularly on the many uphill stretches. Whenever I pass him we exchange the standard pilgrim greeting and I raise my thumb hoping that he takes it in the universal way of “are you ok?” He has always nodded and smiled. That smile lights up his face, and in turn makes my heart sing. I have no doubt that he will make it to Santiago and this comforts me and gives me confidence in my journey.
May I wish you all joy and peace this Easter weekend
Buen Camino!
