Friendship

Friendship refreshes the soul….

I have now walked to Astorga (550kms) passing through Mansillas las Mulas and through Leon where I spent a welcome rest day. Yesterday, I walked to Hospital de Orbigo, a 40km stage which was taxing. It was made enjoyable by being in the company of three fellow pilgrims – Bernhard, a German; Brett, a South African and best of all my friend Jon, a Dane.

I returned to my hotel in Leon on Tuesday to find Jon sitting in the lobby waiting for me. A wonderful surprise that he and Daphne had hatched. It was great to see him and to have him walking with me, even if just for a few days.

Unfortunately for him, his first day of walking coincided with my longest day, walking straight into a howling gale so by the time we reached Hospital de Orbigo he was shattered (as was I). Over dinner, Jon explained how much he enjoyed the day, especially the comfort of knowing that his fellow walkers were alongside him without having to talk. He also explained that in these few days he has seen a glimpse of the rhythm of the Camino and how therapeutic it can be for the pilgrims.

I will be eternally grateful to him for joining me and will be sad when he leaves tomorrow. Thank you my friend.

Buen Camino

  2. I begin to wonder if walking into a howling gale for 40k is fun? But we do admire you

There were a few moments on the long straight road where some choice language came out from us all. The promise of a Cohiba and some good red kept us going!!
